A Brief History of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Green Valley
The congregation has progressed over the years from group meetings once a month for discussion in 1970 to a committed congregation meeting every Sunday. In 1993, under the leadership of Marion Hornbeck and Paul Baird, the UU group became a full-fledged congregation affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. Membership growth dictated moving from bi-monthly services at La Posada to holding weekly services at Canoa Hills Social Center in 1995.
UUCGV has been served by seven ministers:
Reverend Alexander (Scotty) Meek, 1997 – 1999
Reverend Lewis Dunlap, 2000 – 2001
Reverend Linda Bunyard, 2001 – 2007
Reverend Roy Philips, 2007 – 2008
Reverend Dr. Charles A Gaines, 2007 – 2008
Ellen Germann, UUA Consultant, 2007 – 2008
Reverend Roberta Haskin, 2009 - 2010
Reverend William Haney, 2010 - 2011
In 2003, UUCGV purchased the Fellowship House in Sahuarita, AZ. This provided office and meeting rooms for the Board, committees, choir rehearsals and potluck suppers during the summer.
The congregation has been a member of the Green Valley Interfaith Council since 1992. UUCGV members are involved in many of the activities connected with the Santa Cruz Valley border issues.
In 2006, UUCGV became a Welcoming Congregation and religious education classes for children on Sunday mornings were available.
The congregation purchased the Mercado Building at the Arizona Territory Ranch in Amado, Arizona and held the first service there on April 4, 2010. The Fellowship House was sold and the Grounds' property, a generous donation of land, is currently on the market.
The Unitarian Universalist congregation (UUC) now serves Amado, Arivaca, Green Valley, Nogales, Rio Rico,Sahuarita and Tubac.
